Many interpretations of The Sea,the Sea by Iris Murdoch tend to assume that the protagonist Charles, like many other protagonists in her other novels, grasps the essence of good after all the happenings in the novel. An opposite opinion is expounded here by adopting a Levinasian perspective. This article analyzes the relationship between Charles and other in terms of his attitudes towards concepts like time, feminine and death of other, nuancing the author's doubt over man's ability to pursue good and the difficulty one may encounter on the path to good.A more mature author is thus revealed.
