当代科学与宗教关系研究的核心问题之一就是方法论问题,巴伯最大的贡献正是在重新梳理传统科学与宗教关系的过程中引入了批判实在论方法论,并在此基础上把科学与宗教作为两种社会建制进行类比研究。批判实在论类比模式也是巴伯关于科学与宗教关系研究的代表性成果"四分说"(冲突、无关、对话、整合)的思想来源。巴伯对批判实在论的新突破在于尝试运用过程范畴思想对类比模式的融合进行新型本体论上的建构。

Methodology is one of the core issues in the research on contemporary science-religion relation. Particularly speaking, Barbour＇s biggest contribution i＇s to involve the methodology of critical realism into the field of traditional science-religion relation. Actually, Barbour＇s fourfold typology is based on this methodology which refers to analogy and mode research. The common point for analogy is that science and religion can be both regarded as social institution. What Barbour did on critical realism is to inherit its reasonable methodology and carry out ontological reconstruction with the aid of process thought.
