Preliminary Spreading of the Western Free Thought in China Before and After the Opium War

鸦片战争前后,一些西方传教士和中国的仁人志士开始把西方自由思想传播到中国,给中国人带来了与中国文化不太相符的东西。踏上中国土地的西方人虽然各有目的,但是他们或创办报刊,或设立学校,或兴办慈善事业,逐渐把西方的自由思想传入中国。魏源等中国人也注意到了西方的自由思想,并自觉不自觉进行宣传。这些自由思想是概括性的,但是为西方自由思想在中国的广泛传播创造了条件。

Occidental missionaries and advanced Chinese people began to spread the Western free thought to China before and after the Opium War which was not consistent with the Chinese culture.Occidental people coming to China had different purposes,but they founded presses,set up schools or organized charities,gradually spreading the Western free thought to China.Wei Yuan and people like him noticed the Western free thought,and consciously or unconsciously made propaganda.Though recapitulative,the spreading activities created the conditions for widespread promulgation of the Western free thought in China.
