Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum resistin concentration and ankle-brachial index (ABI) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Fasting serum resistin concentration was measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 113 patients with type 2 diabetes. These patients were divided into two groups: ABI≥0.9 group (n=71) and ABI〈0.9 group (n=42). Results: The age, duration of diabetes, systolic blood pressure (SBP), fasting blood glucose, urine albumin and the incidence of retinopathy in ABI〈0.9 group was significantly higher than that in ABI ≥0.9 group (P〈0.05); The fasting serum resistin concentration in ABI〈0.9 group was significantly higher than that in ABI≥ 0.9 group (P〈0.01). After adjusting for age, sex, body mass index (BMI) and known-duration of diabetes, the serum resistin level in ABI〈0.9 group was still significantly higher than that in ABI≥0.9 group (P=0.045). Spearman analyzed shows that ABI was significantly correlated with age, known-duration of diabetes, SBP, LDL-C, HbAc, urinary albumin excretion and serum resistin level (P〈0.05). After adjusting for age, sex, BMI and known-duration of diabetes, ABI was still significantly correlated with serum resistin level (r=0.201, P=0.041). Conclusion: This study indicated that ABI is related to serum resistin concentration in patients with type 2 diabetes, resistin may be one of the important risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
