T helper 17 (Thl7) cells and regulatory T (Treg) cells are a recently discovered CD4+ T cell subset. Thl7 cells can promote the activation and recruitment of neutrophils, and mediate inflammation via secreting interleukin-17. Treg cells can suppress immune response and maintain immune tolerance mainly via direct contact and secretion of inhibitory cytokines. Both Thl7 and Treg cells participate in the initiation and progression of some autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and tumors. Studies have shown that the abnormal immune response induced by the disequilibrium between Thl7 and Treg cells plays an important role in the pathogenesis of these diseases. The authors discuss the equilibrium between Thl7 and Treg cells in some skin diseases.
