This paper makes a new interpretation on the name of Yi xiang ( lit. , images of Change) recorded in ancient literature, pointing out that Yi xiang was nothing but another appellation of the Zhouyi at that time ; Yi xiang is not directly related to the Xiang zhuan ( Commentary on the Image) in the received version of Zhouyi. The Xiang zhuan advocates virtues while the Yi xiang values rites and rituals-even till the Han dynasty ( 206 BCE-220 CE ) there was the tradition interpreting the Zhouyi by ancient rites and rituals. The ancient Zhouyi originally possesses Xiang jing ( Text of Images I or Gua xia yi ring ( The Classic of Change Under Hexa- grams) yet not passed down but still available in the works of Change of the Qing dynasty ( 1616-1911 ) scholars.
