On the Indeterminacy of Characters' States of Being in Light in August——Take Christmas for Example

"不确定性"是后现代主义文学的特征之一,但它在现代主义文学中就已经存在。在福克纳的《八月之光》中,人物的存在状态呈现出明显的不确定性特征。以主人公克里斯默斯为代表,这种不确定性主要表现为三种:时间中的悬浮、空间里的游离和精神上的偏执。而失去确定性之后孤独飘荡的个体,就成了《八月之光》中的核心意象。对于这种困境,福克纳在小说中虽未明确地给出拯救的方式,却通过莉娜的象征意义间接地指出了一条解救之道。

＇Indeterminacy＇ is an important character of post-modernism literature,but it＇s already existed in modernism literature.In Faulkner＇s Light in August,characters＇ being shows some kind of indeterminacy.That indeterminacy by the representative of Christmas has three main representations：suspension in time,dissociation in space and obstinacy in spirit.And the characters that stray lonely away from their determinacy have become the core image in the work.To solve this problem,Faulkner had showed the rescue indirectly with the symbolic meaning of Lena,though he had not given us an explicit way.
