Based on the Theory of Interpersonal Function within Systemic-Functional Grammar, this study aims at an interpersonal explanation of the two address terms mainly used in the editorials of The New York Times in reference to Barack Obama. Particularly, this paper attempts to explain why the editorial prefers "Mr." to "president" in addressing the president. On one hand, this is required of by its function and obligation as mass media; on the other, it is the result of the interaction and negotiation in terms of reading position among discourse participants.
