Chiang Kai-shek's Strategy to the Bombardment of Kinmen by PLA in 1958——Based on the Study of "Chiang Kai-shek Diaries"

人民解放军1958年炮击金门,是第二次台海危机的重大事件。炮击前,蒋介石做好了应战准备,且试图以此为契机,实施军事"反攻复国"的战略。炮击时,美国力促金门守军撤退,以造成"两个中国"。蒋介石反对从金门撤军,坚持"一个中国"的原则,在事实上与毛泽东遥相呼应,使台海问题继续停留于"国共内争"的局面。

People＇s Liberation Army shelled Kinmen in 1958 ,which is the second major event in the Taiwan Strait crisis. Prior to the bombardment, Chiang Kai-shek made full preparations and tried to take this opportunity to implement his military strategy of ＂Zionist offensive＂. While at the time of the bombardment the United States urged the Kinmen defenders to retreat so as to create ＂Two Chinas＂. However, Chiang Kai-shek was against it, and insisted on ＂One China＂ principle,which echoed with Mao Zedong, thus kept the Taiwan Question continually in the situation of ＂Struggle within the KMT＂.
