Horizon of expectations is an important term used in the reception theory of Hans Robert Jauss to designate the set of cultural norms, assumptions, and criteria forming the forestructure of understanding and shaping the way in which readers understand and judge a literary work at a given time. In this pa- per, the connotations of the concept are clarified. It is held that such ＇horizons＇ are subject to historical change, interacting with new literary works. The aesthetic distance between the horizons and the new work enables the readers to see a very different range of meanings in the same work, and revalue it accordingly.
