Relativity of Hypotaxis and Parataxis in Translation:A Perspective of the System of Styles

从文本的风格系统构成来探索形合与意合问题可以发现,英语形合性与汉语意合性实则是作品语言风格和民族风格的体现,而其相对性则是对言语风格和语体、时代风格的体现,两者是相辅相成的关系。在研究中,需要充分关注常被忽略的英语意合和汉语形合现象。在翻译实践中,有必要保留原文中的形合或意合特征,有时需要特意以汉语形合的方式翻译英语的意合表达,或反之,以尽可能完整地保存原作的总体风格。

When hypotaxis and parataxis are explored from the perspective of the construction of the system of styles in texts, it can be found that the hypotaxis-prominence in English and parataxis-prominence in Chinese are actually the manifestation of the works＇ style of language and nationality, and its relativity, the manifestation of its style of speech, type of writing and times. They are two sides of a coin, neither of which should be overemphasized at the expense of the other. Full attention should be paid to parataxis in English and hypotaxis in Chinese, which are often neglected in relevant studies. In translation practice, sometimes it is necessary for us to keep the hypotactical or paratactic characteristics of the original text, or even intentionally apply hypotaxis in the translated Chinese version for the parataxis in the original English text, or vice versa, to reserve its original style as completely as possible.
