This article describes the work of Professors James Hitchmough and Nigel Dunnett on developing the herbaceous plant communities at the 2012 London Olympic Park. The London Olympic Park is probably the most sustainable of any games to date, and this is particularly evident in the landscapes of the 250hm2 site. The overriding planting design philosophy for the site has been to use ecologically informed plant communities to maximize sustainability but which are designed to maximize drama and seasonal colour both for visitors to the park during the 2012 Games, but also in the longer term when much of the landscape is retained to form a major new regional park for the east end of London. The park and naturalistic planting design are described and discussed in the context of current practical and philosophical positions towards the design of more sustainable urban environments.
