In the countless new town developments in China,we have witnessed an increasingly privatized domain both spatially and socially.Ironically these developments also represent the largest source of projects as well as mis-opportunities for Chinese architects.The article describes the work of a group of Shanghai-based architects and examines how their design has responded thus far to the New Town phenomenon with a particular focus on the public realm.
