Compensatory Strategies on Cultural Context in Translation of Ancient Chinese Poetry

语言具有鲜明的民族特征,同时蕴藏着极其深刻的文化内涵。翻译不仅涉及两种语言,更涉及两种文化。我国古典诗歌中存在的大量的专有名词、典故及严格的韵律等文化因素给古诗英译增加了极大的难度。本文拟在分析古诗英译的一些实例的基础上,指出不同的译者在翻译过程中针对文化现象所采取的不同补偿策略,旨在为更多的译者在今后的古诗翻译中提出实用的文化语境补偿策略。

The language has distinct national characteristics and extremely deep cultural implication at the same time. Translation involves not only Chinese and English these two languages, but these two cultures. Many a cultural elements such as proper nouns, allusions and strict rhythm existing in Chinese ancient poetry make the task of translation more difficult. This essay aims at pointing out various compensatory strategies on cultural phenomena that has taken by the translators in translation based on the analysis of some examples. The purpose of the study is to put forward some apphed compensatory strategies on cultural context in the translation of Chinese ancient poetry.
