According to psycholinguists and cognitive psychologists, human final comprehension of language is building a corresponding mental representation of what has been read. Mental representation is made up of conceptual constituents. After reading, several layers of mental representation can be left in readers' mind: a level of micro mental representation on the stylistic and text-type information, a level of sentence representation encompassing conceptual categories, speech acts, register, moods and etc. Thus, while translating, the translator should adapt to source language and target language cognitive environments so that target language readers could build the most similar mental representation as that of source language readers. Mental representation approach can well explain the translation of some fashion terms, semantically complex sentences, and poetry.
