Thangka, a Tibetan expression of religious painting, had yet to get known to the rest of the world until two or three decades ago. However, its history can date back at least 1,500 years. According to the Catalogue of the Jokhang Monastery, Songtzen Gampo, a Tibetan king during the Tubo Dynasty (7th -9th century), drew a portrait of Palden Lhamo (heavenly mother) with his nosebleed. This work of painting hasfailed to survive in modern times, but it provides the evidence that thangkas of deity portraits painted on cloth began to appear at that time.
