The Possibilities Open to Designers and Products

Of the many definitions put forward to describe design and the people in the industry, I am particularly fond of the term ＂technical intellectuals＇ applied to designers. Not just ＇technical inventors＇, with a strong creative side, but intellectuals with a radical critical and reflective vision of the world and how it works. Perhaps not everyone would agree with this term; it could be seen as an oxymoron. However, nobody can deny that the latest research developments in the fields of electronics, microelectronics, sensors, digital technology, materials and nanomaterials have led to the emergence of an unexpected unity between technology and the deeper meaning of the products, projects or experiments of many designers. The extent of this is such that it is now possible to talk about contemporary design in terms of its relationship with technology and how it is applied in a wide range of sectors, first and foremost in that of materials.
