向家坝水电站是金沙江下游梯级电站开发的最后一级水电站，坝址位于四川省宜宾县与云南省水富县交界的峡谷出口处。向家坝水电站开发任务以发电为主，同时改善上、下游通航条件，兼顾灌溉，结合防洪、拦沙，并且具有对上游梯级电站进行反调节等综合作用。
