现代语言学的奠基人索绪尔在他三度讲授的《普通语言学教程》里,讨论了语言和文字的关系等一系列文字学问题。细致考察《教程》的内容,索绪尔的文字学思想可以概括为以下几个方面:文字与语言是两种不同的、相互独立的符号系统;文字是表现语言的书写符号系统;文字符号具有诸多类似于语言符号方面的特点;世界上的文字只有表音与表意两种体系类型;表音文字应谨慎地对待正字法改革。
