Under the backgrounds such as the tradition of prewar students’ movement, the demilitarization and democratic reform by GHQ in Japan, the active movements by the Japanese Communist Party which was legalized after the war,the diffculties in life and the tuition rising, students from a number of universities founded a students organization: the National Federation of Students’ Self-Government Associations, which is shortened as Zengakuren, and initiated large-scale social movements.Though there was a split in it due to the contradictories among different political parties and groups, the organization took the lead in antiestablishment movements, for instance, the movements against the amendment of the Japan-U.S.Security Treaty and U.S.military bases in Japan.
