张承志早期的创作并没有明显的宗教色彩,在"前定"的呼唤中,他进入了大西北,回族的血性在追寻中被真主唤醒。哲合忍耶是穷人的宗教,具有神秘主义特点。哲合忍耶精神与张承志的个性、审美原则、文学理想达成了一致。张承志皈依了哲合忍耶后,伊斯兰成为他创作的题材和文学精神指向。为了更好的表达虔诚的宗教情怀,张承志后期的小说中出现了诗化的特点。随着宗教情感的升腾,为了表达的需要,张承志的创作从小说转向了散文,视野逐步开阔,也更加深刻的理解和领悟伊斯兰文化的丰富而深刻的内涵。
