Inscriptions on thehu vessel of the Marquis Qi documented how the marquis performed the mourning rite for his concubine Chenshi. The mourning rite performed by the marquis was the same as the ritual reserved only for the prince-a dear violation to mortuary regulations. This record helps us understand why Chenshi's burial at Zuiziqian in Haiyang had seven d/rig tripods included. TheErt/anzi mentioned in the inscriptions refer to two concubines of Sage Shun, who also appear in the bamboo slips of the Chu state. Both texts involved Chert State ritual sacrifices. Understanding the Chen state's relationships with the two states Qi and Chu is essential to understanding the questions posed by the inscriptions and other ar- chaeological finds.
