Nixon's Secret Commitment and Its Impact on the Vietnam War

越南战争进入1972年后,面对美国国内的反战压力与追求连任的强烈愿望,尼克松迫切需要尽快摆脱越战泥潭。为此,尼克松借基辛格之口,在瞒着美国盟友南越的情况下,通过苏联和中国向北越做出秘密承诺:只要北越同意签署巴黎协定,让美军撤离,释放美国战俘,并在协定后留出一段间隔期,保全美国的颜面,那么之后北越即使发动对南越的进攻,美国也不会干涉。美国的秘密承诺促成了巴黎协定的签署,结束了美国对越南的干涉,同时也注定了南越灭亡的命运。

When the Vietnam War dragged into 1972,President Nixon was eager to get rid of the war to cope with domestic anti-war movement and win his presidential re-election.He sent Kissinger to transmit his secret commitment to North the whole Vietnam,by Soviet Union and China: As long as North Vietnam agreed to sign the Paris Agreement,let U.S.troops withdraw from South Vietnam and returned U.S.POW,U.S.'s would allow North Vietnam to unify Vietnam by war after a proper interval.Nixon's Secret Commitment ended the U.S.Vietnam War and determined the fate of South Vietnam.
