摘要
1924年,泰戈尔中国演讲涉及东方与西方、科学与人文、文明与发展等重大理论和现实问题,在我国文化界引起广泛讨论。泰戈尔反对以机器为代表的西方物质文明,提倡以"达磨(dharma)"为标志的东方精神文明,是19世纪以来科技与人文矛盾的反映,与发生在中国的科学与玄学之争紧密联系。泰戈尔反对违背人性、破坏自然环境、破坏人的诗意生存状态的发展,期望有道德护持、由文明伴随、与完善并行不悖、有韵律的和谐发展。在20世纪初的中国,泰戈尔反工业文明、反现代化的思想和言论显得不合时宜,但与20世纪后期的新人文主义非常合拍。
A debate was sparked off in Chinese cultural circles by Tagore's speech during his visit to China in 1924.The debate involved many important theoretical and practical problems such as orient and occident,science and humanity,civilization and development,etc.Tagore opposed to the occidental material civilization represented by machine,and advocated the oriental spiritual civilization marked with "Dharma".On the one hand,it is a reflection of the sci-tech and humanity conflict that occurred in the 19th century;on the other hand,it is closely related to the "Science-Metaphysics Debate" in China.Similarly,he opposed to the development against humanity,destroying natural environment and human's poetic status of living.On the contrary,he expected a kind of rhythmic and harmonious development protected by moral,accompanied with civilization and perfection.Tagore's view and speech appeared inappropriate in China at the beginning of the 20th century but was in step with the the Neo-Humanism developed in the late 20th century.
