"编史元小说"理论是琳达·哈琴后现代主义诗学中的重要概念。它有助于分析和理解20世纪六七十年代以来欧美文坛涌现出的一股既重要又特别的创作潮流以及其他大部分后现代主义小说。"编史元小说"概念的提出有着深厚的理论基础,一方面吸收了历史书写的传统理论,另一方面又在理解后现代主义和后现代主义小说的内涵及特征基础上清楚地展示了历史与文学虚构的关系问题,并着重展现二者之间关系的形成及变化的过程。

＂Histriographic Metafiction＂ is an important concept of Linda Hutcheon＇s postmodemism poetics. It will help for the analysis and comprehension of the European and American distinct creative trend which emerged from the 1960s and 1970s. This concept was formed on the basis of profound theory tradition. On the one hand, it assimilates the traditional theories of history writing. On the other hand, this concept, based on the comprehension of the connotation and characteristics of postmodemism and postmodemist fiction, has embodied the relationship between history and literary fiction. Moreover, it attaches more impor- tance to the forming and changing process of the relationship between them.
