Relations between Sushun and Zeng Guofan's Group

太平军兴起,咸丰帝面对危局束手无策,重臣肃顺力主破除满汉成见,予汉人将领以地方军政实权,不仅使曾国藩及其集团成员得以受到重用,而且使清政府暂度危局。祺祥政变后,慈禧太后、奕等杀其人而不废其策,以致能坐致中兴,晚清政局为之一变。

When the Xianfeng Emperor was unable to handle the crisis caused by the Taiping Revolution, one of his favoured ministers Sushun persuaded him to grant local military and political powers to Han generals. Zeng Guofan and his followers were thus put in important positions and offered great help to the Qing government. After the Coup of Qixiang, Sushun was killed by the order of the Empress Dowager Cixi and Yixin, but his policies were continued and brought changes to the late Qing.
