Manufacturing enterprises in the future will be faced with unpredictable, rapidly changeable and radical market competition driven by customer's demands from all quarters of the globe. To obtain and maintain this competitive competence, these enterprises must carry out next-generation manufacturing systems——Rapidly Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RRMS) that are quickly, qualitatively and cost-effectively responsive to these changes of market demands. The scientific principles, theory and methods of the RRMS are discussed, and current cases of reconfiguration of manufacturing systems and manufacturing cells in China are also presented in this paper.
