The cytotoxity of extracellular products (ECP) of Edwardsiella tarda (Et) strains from different sources were investigated. ECP were prepared by a cellophane overlaid agar method. The ECP of 18/26 Et strains had a cytotoxic effect on HEp 2 cells, which could be inhibitied by the antiserum against ECP of ATCC15947. The ECP had no toxic effects to HEp 2 cells after being dealt with trypsin or heat. Western blot of ECP probed with antisera against ECP of ATCC15947 strain showed that 9 virulent strains from different sources had the same three antigenic proteins of 14 400, 32 300 and 79 400. The toxity of ECP of 5 selected Et strains was tested in the mice and fish (Xiphophorus helleri) with the pathogenicity of cytotoxic ECP of 4 strains to mice and fish to be 75% and 67.5% respectively, while the ECP without cytotoxity had no virulence to these animals.
