董学文为长期僵化的"左"的文论话语注入了新鲜的符合马克思主义文艺思想的新成分。他是最早也最积极地对"当代形态"文艺理论建构本身进行呼吁和理论探求的学者之一,并进行符合中国当代现实文艺与社会需要的新形态的马克思主义美学和文艺理论建设。"文学理论学"学科是董先生关于文学理论的"元理论"性质的反思,呈现的是一种形而上的理论建构,但实际上,他始终将自己的思考不断地与文学理论的历史事实相呼应,在二者的互动中把握理论实质。

Dong Xuewen instilled into the fossilized literary language affected by leftism with new components which accord with Marxism. He is one of the scholars who first called on the construction of contemporary literary theory and carried out the research on the theory. He intended to construct a new form of Marxist aesthetics and literary theory which conform to Chinese contemporary realistic literature and social needs. The discipline of literary theory is his reflection on the nature of literary theory as a ＇prototypical＇ theory and is a metaphysic construction, but in fact his thoughts echo with the historical facts in literary theory and he grasps the essence of theory in the interaction.
