在中西比较诗学草创之初,寻求中国古代文论的潜体系,并将其与当代西方诗学加以比较、综合,是刘若愚苦心孤诣的学术追求。《中国文学理论》作为首部以英语对中国古代文论进行系统、分类阐释的著作,诞生三十余年来,在美国、港台及大陆学界备受瞩目的同时也引发了大量争议。本文在二战以来美国汉学的发展背景及刘若愚学术著述的整体中,揭示出他建构中国古代文论体系的背景、方法、实质及意义。

As one of the pioneers in the field of comparative poetics between China and the West,Professor James J.Y.Liu＇s books,which were written from the 1960s to the mid 80s,have great significance in this area.However,because of the differences in language,time and audience,there is still a controversy in China's Mainland over his method of adopting western language and methodology to interpret traditional Chinese literature and poetics.This paper tends to weave all of James.J.Y.Liu＇s academic books into an integral whole and explore the reasons,essence and significance of his system of traditional Chinese criticisms on the basis of the vast researches into Sinology in America since the World War Ⅱ.
