While Chinese migration has a long history, the greatest attention has been given to the recent waves of migration that started around the late 1970s and have continued to go upward up to today. From a Southeast Asian scholar's perspective, the author first compares the similarities and differences between the old migrants and the new ones, including their economic and education backgrounds, motives, intended destinations, and migration channels.Based on this comparison, the author re-examines the conventional concepts of Chinese migration. The author then further compares the different situations the new Chinese migrants are confronted with and the different influences they have made in nations of immigrants such as Canada, the United States,New Zealand,Australia, and Singapore, and nations of indigenous inhabitants such as Malaysia,Indonesia,Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand. Finally the author compares the research work done by scholars abroad and in China and provides his advice.
