摘要
《红字》的巨大成功促使评论家和读者将霍桑与新英格兰及清教联系在一起,然而,在回望历史的同时,作家始终在进行着与现实的对话。文章通过分析霍桑一些代表性的短篇小说及著名长篇小说阐释其与时代的对话关系,还原作家作为他所属的那个时代的敏锐的观察者、记录者和思考者的本来面目。
The overwhelming success of ＂The Scarlet Letter＂ made the critics as well as readers associate Hawthorne with the New England and Puritanism.However,the writer consistently exchanges his dialogue with his times.By analyzing Hawthorne＇s some representative and short and long novels,the paper tends to restore his true features as the keen observer,recorder and thinker of his times.
