This article explores Grice＇s Cooperative Principle in conversation,especially the violation of the principle so as to examine the speech of Baochai,an important character in the classic Chinese fiction The Dream of Red Mansions.Through the analysis of Baochai＇s conversation with various characters in the fiction,the article demonstrates that the purpose of a conversation,as well as the characterization of participants of the conversation,can often be better achieved when the Cooperative Principle is violated.
