The Contradiction and Integration of Two Epistemological Methods in Western Linguistic Historiography

西方哲学史上的认识论存在着经验主义和理性主义两种思想体系。这两种思想体系在历史上对于语言学家研究语言问题有着深刻的影响。可以说,从古希腊的"名实"之争到文艺复兴时期的经验语法和唯理语法,再到当代描写结构主义和转换生成语法,无不体现了两种认识论的对立和统一。

There are two most influential schools, rationalism and empiricism, in the epistemology of western philosophy. They exert a profound influence on linguistics. From the debate on name and reality in ancient Greak to empirical grammar and rational grammar in the Renaissance and further to contemporary descriptivism and transformational generative grammar, all reflect the contradiction and integration of the two epistemological methods.
