慕容鲜卑是先于拓拔鲜卑问鼎中原的鲜卑人,其建立的前燕政权全盛时与东晋、前秦形成鼎足之势,但统治阶级内部的权力之争却将前燕推向覆灭的边缘,前燕征南大将军慕容垂为躲避朝中异己势力的迫害,投奔前秦符坚。符坚兵败淝水导致了前秦政权的迅速崩溃,慕容垂伺机叛秦,带领各地慕容氏势力恢复燕国,建立后燕。
