Southern Tour Talks is an agglomeration of Deng Xiaoping＇ s previous ideas. It is a comprehensive work in which Deng Xiaoping presented relatively complete arguments on quite a few theoretical issues concerning the building of socialism with Chinese characteristics. It timely and clearly answered several major ideologically dis- turbing and restraining questions since the reform and opening-up and staged on the theoretical frontier of contem- porary China. The important theoretical ideas raised, such as ＂reform also means the emancipation of the produc- tive forces,＂ ＂the principle of the three favorables ,＂ ＂development is the most essential criterion,＂ ＂the essence of socialism,＂ and ＂socialist market economy,＂ raised the understanding of adapting Marxism to Chinese conditions to a new scientific level. Its becoming a masterpiece is inseparable from Deng Xiaoping＇ s personal qualities. It will continue to be our key guidance to dispel misgivings, emancipate the mind, deepen the reform, aggressively en- hance integrity upholding and corruptions combating, promote the building of a system of socialist core values, and oppose formalism and rectify the style of writing.
