Abstract： Paper cut, an art form that is popular and originated among folks, is blended with folk customs dur- ing its long progress of development. Pt,per cut is a straightforward activity which is a kind of decoration in daily life, an expression of aspiration about flJture and emotions. Through profound understanding and unique art crea- tion, Matisse the master of modern art opened up a new perspective of art for paper cut by lessening the complexity of paper cut related with folk customs, the worldly-minded purposes and values. During the modernization progress of China, where there is a great profusion of paper cut art resources, it is a very impo^rtant task to find out about how to inherit the best achievements of traditional art, how to modernize the traditional art forms and achieve inno- vations. The work of Matisse in the field of paper cut is a brilliant accomplishment of modern art, a significance en- lightenment for the development of traditional paper cut art in contemporary times.
