Objective TO find out departmental directors' attitude toward the adoption of holistic nursing so as to provide information to leaders concerned. Methods An anonymous investigation was conducted among the directors, deputy directors and head nurses of a teaching hospital with self-designed questionnaires. Results 26% of the directors know something about holistic nursing and those who learned of the concept from nurses in the same hospital account for 74%. The number of departments whose leading bodies have never discussed holistic nursing accounts for 85%. 53% of the directors have never taken a look at the nursing records and among them 39% hold that these records are of little help to medical treatment. Directors who consider holistic nursing to be within the scope of their powers and functions account for 47%, those who take the conduction of it as necessary account for 94% and those who think it can give an impetus to medical treatment account for 80%. Conclusion Some achievements have been made in carrying out holistic nursing in recent years and the involvement of departmental directors has been of vital importance. However, the question of how to make the directors understand, support and participate in the adoption of holistic nursing is an issue that decision-makers in the field of health administration and hospital management need to attach importance to.
