Four smut diseases were found on herbaceous plants grown in Gansu Province, China, and the pathogens were identified with the aids of light and scanning electornic microscopes. They were Ustilago spermophpra on Eragrostis cillianens, Sporisorium andropogonis on Bothriochlora ischaemum, Urocystis anemones on Anemone rivularis, and Microbotryum bistortatrum on Polygonum viviparum. Disease symptom and fungal morphology were described for each disease and its causal agent. All of the four diseases have not been reported in Gansu Province previously.
