The recent progress in graded index (GI) plastic optical fibers (POF) are reviewed. The polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) base, perdeuterated PMMA base and perfluorinated (PF) polymer base GI POFs are considered for the application of high speed data communications. The attenuation spectrums and loss mechanisms of the GI POFs are introduced. The GI POF forming methods including interfacial gel polymerization technique and two diffusion methods are described and the resultant refractive index profiles are analyzed. The choices of dopants to obtain high stability GI POF are discussed. The recent developments in high stability GI POF are introduced and future research directions are discussed.
