民国时期,国内掀起了开发考察西北的热潮。马鹤天是当时著名的边疆史地专家,他先后三次来到青海,对这块热土作了深入细致的考察,并留下了《西北考察记》(青海篇)和《甘青藏边区考察记》两部著作。两书对青海社会、政治、经济和教育等方面作了全方位的透视,为研究民国时期青海的社情民情提供了丰富的历史资料。

Living in the Republic of China,Hetian Ma,a famous histography expert of the frontier,came to Qinghai,where he had conducted the deep and exhaustive investigation for three times under the strong wave of exploring the Northwest of the nation.And he left behind himself two masterpieces centering on Qinghai： The Investigation of the Nation＇s Northwest（Of Qinghai） and The Investigation of the Border Areas in the Province of Gansu,Qinghai and Tibet.These two books give a comprehensive perspective to Qinghai＇s society,politics,economics,and education,which provide the adequate historical data for the further study of social and local customs as well.Moreover,considering Qinghai＇s practical situations,some impartial suggestions were offered in these two books.
