The western novels Baihuguan and Zaokong both describe the overall social transformation in China, during which western farmers' practical benefits are affected by modernization that is characterized by industrialization, urbanization, and commercialization. Their subjective status in the rural world is declining, and then survival anxieties arise, and they gradually reveal their "wasteland" experience in losing their homeland, both realistic and spiritual.
