On the Paradox of Translation Criterion ＂Faithfulness＂

翻译标准“忠实”在中西方翻译界几乎得到一致认可。然而，中外学者又普遍认为客观上根本不存在绝对的忠实。英汉语言差异及中西文化差异是翻译标准矛盾性存在的主要原因。虽然没有纯粹忠实的翻译，但“忠实”标准作为一种价值取向，阶段性的、相对的忠实还是可求的。

The translation criterion of faithfulness has been almost unanimously approved. However, the Chinese and foreign scholars generally believe that there is no absolutely faithful translation. Language andculture differences mainly lead to the paradox of translation criterion. No absolute faithful translation ex- ists, but faithfulness as a value orientation, relative faithfulness is attainable.
