可持续发展道路必须有可持续消费模式的支撑．传统的工业文明消费模式不顾资源的有限性和生态环境承载能力的有限性，在消费方式上，是一种挥霍型消费，激化了人与自然的矛盾；在消费性质上，属于不公平消费，激化了人与人之间的社会矛盾；在消费结构上，片面追求物质消费，而相对忽视精神消费，不利于人类身心全面发展．人类从工业文明向生态文明的转变迫切要求工业文明消费模式向可持续消费模式转变。
