叶衍兰主张诗歌在抒发个体真性情的同时,保持高雅的文化品味,对于各种文学风格持开放、包容的态度,尊重个人天性,表现出独特的文化品格。在创作上,叶衍兰《海云阁诗钞》具有明显的词化倾向,蕴涵着花间词的美学特质,对晚清岭南文学颇具典型意义。

Ye Yanlan（1823-1897） argued that poetry should express personal feelings, and keep the elegant cultural taste. He advocated an open, inclusive attitude to all kinds of literary style, respected for the individual nature, demonstrated the unique cultural character. In the aspect of poetry creation,Ye Yanlan＇s Haiyunge Anthology has obvious Ci lyrics tendency, which contains the aesthetic characteristics ofHuajian Ci, that is of typical significance for the Linnan literature in the late Qing Dynasty.
