Analyzing the Problem of Silver Appreciation And Copper Cash Depreciation in the Chia-ch'ing and Tao-kuang Periods

嘉庆道光年间严重而持久的银贵钱贱问题备受学者关注。文章探讨了银贵钱贱的形成、分布、影响及其原因。笔者认为,产生嘉庆道光年间银贵钱贱问题的主要原因在于制钱,是钱质低劣导致了银钱比价的不断上升。白银的外流加剧了银贵钱贱现象,使其更为严重。由于社会经济的发展,清廷一直奉行的银钱并行的货币制度已无法适应市场的需要,这是引发嘉庆道光年间银钱比价问题的根本原因。

In the Chia - ch＇ ing and Tao - kuang Periods, the silver - copper cash ratio rippled devastating, and scholars all paid attention to the problem. This thesis analyses the formation, distribution, influence and reason of this problem. This thesis points out the reason of silver appreciation and copper cash depreciation was the decreased of the quality of copper cash. The silver outflow aggravated this problem. In essence, the traditional monetary system did not fit the development of the economy, which was the ultimate reason.
