English Writing of a Cross-border Literary Traveler (1935-1936)——Lin Yutang in Period of T’ien Hsia Monthly

1935至1936年间,林语堂在英文《天下月刊》上发表了一系列英文作品,其中最为突出的是连载的英译《浮生六记》。作为英文期刊作家,林语堂并不停留于单纯的文学译介,更热衷于通过文化译介、借助对中国古代女性文化的独特思考、对海外学者汉学成果的积极关注和以比较文学的眼光对当时中国文学发展的审视,向西方世界解释中国的文化。

From 1935 to 1936, a series of English works written by Lin Yutang, among which was the first serialized translated English version of Six Chapters of a Floating Life, were published in T＇ien Hsia Monthly. As a writer of English journal, he did not focus on mere literary translation, but was more interested in translation of the cultural spirit, trying to explain Chinese culture to the Western world through his own unique thinking about the women＇s culture in ancient China, close attention to the outcome of overseas scholars of Sinology, and examination of the development of modern Chinese literature from the comparative literature perspective.
