The GAP family clan of Mengcheng was an influential martial family clan in the Northern Song Dynasty. This paper probes into the reasons for the rise of the GAO family clan in the literature--oriented society, including heredity, royal connections through marriage, education, family restraint, and the national policy of preferential treatment of officials.
