Relations Between Architectural Environment and People's Culture and Aesthetical Education ——Comment on the Designs of the Newly Built Airportsin Nanjing, Shanghai and Beijing

In recent years, construction of airports in China has experienced a new high tide. Airports in some cities have been completed, such as that of Nanjing, Shanghai and Beijing. Schemes of foreign architects were adopted in designing these airports. The author thinks these designs lack new ideas and connotations of Chinese culture. They give the impression of buying out of date garments from a department store. This triggered the authors comments on the present day Chinese architecture. The author is of the opinion that the great economic development in China has brought the Chinese architects a rare opportunity. They should cherish it. In the new century, they should not go after the designs of international style, unless they can surpass them. Otherwise, it is better to follow Chinese modern style. Chinese traditional culture, architecture and gardening are unique in the world. In the creation of Chinese modern architecture, we must not give up the quest for our national cultural heritage. The author cites some successful examples to illustrate his point, including the Jinmao Building in Shanghai, designed by the American SOM architects. Although it is a modern high rise, it incarnates the image of Chinese pagoda. This argues that if the architects work more hard, they can reap better results.
