Australia welcomes immigrants and is tolerant to refugees. Australia has played an important role inthe resettlement of refugees, a role consistent with its status as a first world country. However, in the wake of the9·11 incident, the Australian government has tightened its refugee policy for the sake of national security. Theresult is the damaged reputation of Australia.
